The Newberg Public Library is in need of volunteers for its school-district-wide “Oregon Battle of the Books Practice Battles” for elementary students. George Fox volunteers have stepped forward in the past, and the hope is that more will volunteer this year.
Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide reading program designed to encourage a love of reading. This competitive reading program involves 692 schools in Oregon this year. The library is in need of moderators (read the questions, act as final judge) and scorekeepers for this event, as well as help with set-up and take-down.
On Friday, Jan. 29, a volunteer training for moderators and scorekeepers will take place at the library (503 E. Hancock St.) from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. On Saturday, Jan. 30, at 8:30 a.m. volunteers will arrive for the battles. Battles begin shortly after 9 a.m.
In Newberg and Dundee, all six public elementary schools are participating, with between 15 and 85 students from each school. This district-wide event allows elementary youth to practice with their peers before battles for points begin. Each school may send only one team to the regional competition in February.
